Spotify and Hulu Team Up to Offer Amazing Deal for Students
Spotify, a music streaming
service that provides to millions of songs, and Hulu, a video streaming service,
announced a team up to offer an entertainment bundle where some U.S. college
students can now have monthly access to both streaming services for a total of
$4.99 per month.
About
Spotify and Hulu Team up
Spotify and Hulu’s partnership
will offer bundle which includes Spotify Premium, the company’s on-demand music
service, and Hulu’s Limited Commercials plan.
The bundle is a discount of
about 73% and savings of $12.99 per month compared to what someone who signed
up for the services and did not have a discount to either streaming plan would
pay.
Separately, Spotify’s ”Premium
for Students” service usually costs $5, and Hulu’s basic ad-supported service
costs $8 a month.
Both companies said they
would offer other bundles in the future targeting the broader market. Details
regarding those plans were not disclosed.
“In bringing Spotify and Hulu
together, we’re now able to offer students, both millions already on Spotify
Premium, and those who are new to Spotify, access to the world’s best music, TV,
and movie content in the simplest possible way,” said Alex Norstom, Chief
Premium business officer at Spotify.
“We’re very excited to be partnering
with Hulu, a like-minded company which is as focused as we are on delivering
the very best in high quality streaming content.”
In the past, both companies
have actually worked with other companies to bundle their offerings. For instance,
Hulu would sell you a subscription to Showtime, and the New York Times would
give new digital subscribers a year of Spotify for free.
Hulu’s SVP and head of
distribution and partnerships, Tim Connolly, said, “We are proud to announce
Spotify as our newest strategic partner – they’re an iconic brand in music
streaming and a proven leader in reaching and engaging young consumers.”
“By bundling our enormous
catalogues of content together in a sale, highly compelling offer, we’re making
it easier for people to enjoy all of the TV and music they love, whenever and
wherever they want.”
This is the first time that Spotify
has teamed up with a streaming TV and movie service like Hulu, and it arrives
when the company has reconsidered its own, existing video offerings.
In fact, according to some
reports, Spotify had once tried to line up a selection of TV channels on its
own for a live video service in Europe,
before the advent of YouTube TV, Hulu, Vue, and others. Unfortunately, it
failed to make the needed deals, so it ended up forsaking those plans.
Qualifications
for the bundle
To be entitled to the
discount, a student must be enrolled at a U.S. title IC accredited college or
university and be at least 18 years old.
The companies will verify
enrollment status through the use of a third-party service called Sheer ID.
