Bob Dylan Establishes Own Line of American Whiskey
Bob Dylan, the legendary artist, is establishing his own
line of craft American whiskeys this week, naming it Heaven’s Door.
Dylan is capitalizing on the Tennessee whiskey boom,
investing in the same city where he had recorded four albums, in partnership
with spirits entrepreneur and Angel’s Envy Bourbon co-founder Marc Bushala.
The business’s distillery and “brand experience center” will
open in 140-year-old church located in Nashville SoBro next year, according to
the website of Heaven’s Door.
“We both wanted to create a collection of American whiskeys
that, in their own way, tell a story,” said Dylan in a statement. “I’ve been
travelling for decades, and I’ve been able to try some of the best spirits that
the world of whiskey has to offer. This is great whiskey. I am happy to be
partnering with Marc and our entire team as we bring Heaven’s Door to the public.”
Dylan is the most recent among the string of celebrities
cashing in on the booming whiskey industry with the demand for American-made
spirits growing.
The American whiskey category is increasing its growth in
the overall spirits industry. Its revenues are going up 8.1 percent to $3.4
billion last year, according to the Distilled Spirits Council. The American whiskey
category includes bourbon, rye, and Tennessee whiskey.
After laws were made less strict in 2009, Tennessee is at present
home to more than 30 distilleries. This opened the door for craft spirit makers
to launch all across the state.
The Heaven’s Door distillery is set to bring a new level of
activity to a renowned historical building that has lately served as offices
for the Tuck-Hinton Architects.
In 2017, Bushala, together with Darek Bell of Nashville’s
Corsair Distillery, paid Tuck-Hinton’s founding partners an amount of $6.2
million for the 0.77-acre property at 610-614 Fifth Ave. S.
This included the church building, which was constructed in
1871 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
Around the time of the purchase, Bushala stated that it was
a portfolio investment and claimed that he was exploring options to open a
restaurant, brewery, or distillery at the site.
Among the first whiskey releases by Heaven’s Door is the Tennessee
Straight Bourbon Whiskey, which has been aged six and a half years. It will
also include a Double Barrel Whiskey, and a Straight Rye Whiskey. In the fall of 2018, a limited release 10-year-old Tennessee
Straight Bourbon Whiskey is set to debut.
Bob Dylan’s artwork will be incorporated into the packaging,
while different master distillers and blenders from all over the United States
will collaborate in the work.
“Rather than make a single whiskey or work with one master
distiller, we thought it would be far more interesting to work with various
master distillers and blenders to make whiskeys that would each have their own
unique signature,” Bushala said in a statement. “By working with different whiskey
artisans for each new expression, the portfolio would be more diverse and
eclectic.”
