Walmart Sweeps Checkout Aisles of Cosmo Magazines
Walmart has
decided to pullout Cosmopolitan Magazine from its checkout lines.
In a move
that the retail giant calls a “business decision,” the magazine famous for its provocative
magazine covers will no longer be available at Walmart on sale at the checkout
lines. One advocacy group has tagged the move as a victory against sexual
exploitation.
Cosmopolitan
is owned by Hearst Communications, and it describes itself as a “bible for fun,
fearless females that reaches more than 18 million readers a month.”
During the
beginning of the magazine, it made a name for itself with provocative covers and
sex advice for its readers. It has also come under fire for marrying its racier
content with young starlets on its pages.
Walmart
stated that it will continue to offer Cosmopolitan to customers that wish to
purchase the magazine, but “will no longer be located in the checkout aisles.”
“While this
was primarily a business decision, the concerns raised were heard,” said
Walmart in a statement.
Meanwhile,
advocacy group National Center on Sexual Exploitation marked the decision as a
win against “Cosmo’s hyper sexualized and degrading article titles.” It says that
the magazine was promoting pornography and other offenses.
“Nationally
representative surveys show that the majority of Americans believe that
Cosmopolitan’s graphic headlines are not appropriate for all ages, and young
girls and boys alike have often reached out to the National Center on Sexual
Exploitation reporting how the magazine’s normalization of sexual
objectification and pornography compound pee-pressure to engage in some risky
sex, which has negatively impacted them,” explained the group on its website.
The group
was founded in 1962 and has since focused on the issue of the “thread of
pornography in the web of sexual exploitation.”
Walmart did
not respond immediately to inquiries.
Rising social and political activism in the US
has compelled business corporations to evaluate their business practices. Among
such incidences are the changes in human resources policies in the wake of the
#MeToo movement and gun restrictions by retailers after the Parkland, Florida.
Walmart is one
of the retailers that have imposed new rules and restrictions on gun sales.
Meanwhile,
several magazines, including Cosmo, have been broadening their content coverage
to include politics.
In 2016
interview with Cosmo, Ivanka Trump said that the magazine’s questions regarding
US President Donald Trump’s childcare and maternity leave policies had a lot of
negativity.
